In In 1912 one of the first cinemas in Spalding opened – The Spalding Picture House.

The Spalding Picture House

There were concerns for the moral impact on juveniles as four burglars below the age of 13 had cited watching burglars break into houses at the cinema as their influence. It was feared that films showing criminal exploits may be dangerous to the moral fibre of the youth of Spalding.

Early silent films shown were The last Days of Pompei (a silent film with Italian subtitles), The Club of the Black Mask (an action drama set on a colonial railway in India), The College Girls (innocent content I am sure), and Wiffles has a Narrow Escape. I’m sure there was little to fear for the moral fibre of Spalding’s youth.
