When I attended Spalding Grammer School in the early 1980’s the woodwork lessons were often accompanied by the background noise of electric guitar, drums and keyboard of the practising Haley Brothers who lived next door to the school. From time to time you would see them poncing around in a clapped out open top Triumph Herald their hair flapping in the slipstream as if they were pop stars.
Actually they did do rather well. 1982 saw the Haley Brothers Band backing Billy Fury until his untimely death. Mark Haley wrote a song called “Don’t Answer” for Hank Marvin on which he also played on the recording of the former Shadow member’s solo album. 1987 saw Lawrie Haley playing bass for the Monkees on a tour of America, Brazil, Mexico and Canada before being joined by his brother. In between jobs they returned to Spalding and played in their band called by the ridiculous name Yum Yum Yum, despite the fact all the locals still called them the Haley Brothers. 1989 saw Mark Haley playing with the Kinks.
Still performing in 2024 they are possibly the most famous popular music stars Spalding has produced.
